Thirlestane is a 16th century castle with a rich military history.
Historic home of the Duke of Lauderdale and the seat of the Maitland family, it has played its part in both Scottish and British military history including offering its support to Bonnie Prince Charlie during the Jacobite rebellion and providing a place of rest and recouperation for officers during the first world war. Our history also includes the surrender of the Emperor Napoleon to Captain Frederick Maitland, the commanding officer of HMS Bellerophon. Many members of the Maitland family served with valour throughout the centuries and our experienced guides will bring their military stories to life taking you on a breathtaking journey through Scottish history.
The tour will last approximately one and a half hours. Your guide will also join you in the Victorian Kitchen for a light lunch including sandwiches with salad, chutney and coleslaw followed by cake and a chocolate treat and refreshments – a perfect way to complete such a special day.
