From 1st to 7th November 2021, Thirlestane Castle hosted our inaugural week-long riding holiday in partnership with Globetrotting Holidays.
After years in the planning and postponement several times due to Covid this intrepid bunch of nine explorers travelled across the globe to ride with us.
Throughout the week our globetrotters toured different routes throughout the Scottish Borders taking in miles of open moorlands, rolling hills, woodlands, coasts, lochs and rivers.
Upon arrival at Thirlestane they had a short time to settle into their grand Scottish surroundings before heading out to explore the local trails including Lauder common.
Our luxury five-star apartments in the South Wing of the castle provided the perfect base for each guest to relax and unwind after a long day in the saddle.
Over the week, the group had the opportunity to dine in the rustic Victorian Kitchen and the castle’s portrait lined State Dining Room. They also enjoyed pre-dinner drinks in the State Drawing Room with Edward Maitland-Carew, whose family home is Thirlestane Castle, and his wife Sarah. Wednesday was a day off. Some went and checked out the local towns of Kelso and Melrose to do a spot of sightseeing and shopping. Others took the time to indulge in a pampering session in their private rooms from our partners at Glo Pamper.
As far as the Scottish climate was concerned, we couldn’t have asked for better weather for our first ever horse safari. The rain stayed away and our riders were blessed with lovely golden autumn sunshine.
This is what our globetrotting guests had to say:
Doreen Heal:
‘I’ve dreamed of visiting Scotland since I was a child. We were hosted by the most gracious family and the genuine care made me feel at home. My magnificent mount, Churchill, was steady and honest. I truly felt taken care of. Our riding mates were delightful and now we have new friends. This trip was a once in a lifetime event that I’ll cherish. I cannot recommend it enough!’
Maddie McKinney:
‘I loved every minute of this ride! The rooms were luxurious and all the food was super fresh. Our guides were great, and so much fun. They allowed us a lot of riding freedom while keeping us safe. I rode Alexandros, who was big and powerful and so steady. All the horses were extremely well looked after. The level of care shown is exactly what I hope to see on all riding holidays. I would most definitely do this ride again!’
