Thirlestane Castle has many exciting private dining locations – from grand State Rooms perfect for a formal feast, to our Vaulted Cellars, which have been recently refurbished and offer a more relaxed experience.
We only work with the best caterers to ensure your food tastes as spectacular as the surroundings look. We are proud to use local produce and are always excited to create bespoke menus upon request. You can relax knowing your guests will be well looked after.
State Dining Room
Lined with portraits of the Maitland family, the State Dining Room is perhaps the most formal dining setting inside the castle and offers stunning views of the gardens outside. Banquet like the former castle residents around a beautifully decorated table and enjoy a unique meal with an atmospheric setting. (Can accommodate up to 70 people).
State Drawing Room
For the grandest of occasions, the State Drawing Room offers opulent surroundings. There’s nothing quite like marveling at 17th Century ceilings, whilst listening to elegant piano music, as you’ll discover in this mesmerising room. If you can tear your eyes away from the alluring green and gold décor for just a moment, you’ll find views of a former rose garden just outside. (Can accommodate up to 100 people).
“The State Dining Room at Thirlestane is one of those rooms where time stands still. You are sitting in a setting for royalty, surrounded by one of the most fantastic family portraits collections anywhere in the world. This is a magnificent place to dine – for pure theatre, nothing comes close.”
– Tim McCreath
Victorian Kitchen
Perfect for a more relaxed occasion, our recently refurbished Victorian Kitchen offers a rustic and less formal, but equally memorable space for a feast, with dreamy rose garden views. These kitchens were originally built to service the State Dining Room, with its great cast iron range. It’s a unique place for an atmospheric dining experience and for this reason it is favoured by the Maitland-Carews. (Can accommodate up to 40 people).
Cobbled Courtyard
Our Cobbled Courtyard is the perfect alfresco dining space for those looking for something a little bit different. Enjoy an outdoor celebration or protect yourself from the elements with a clear-roofed marquee, so you can entertain your guests under the stars. (Can accommodate up to 125 people).
Vaulted Cellar
The castle’s former coal storage room has been converted into a cozy dining space. Vaulted ceilings and a huge log burning stove create a rustic vibe. Should you wish, you can also use the Vaulted Cellar’s courtyard, for your guests to enjoy too. (Can accommodate up to 50 people).
Stretch Tents & Marquees
Make the most of Thirlestane Castle’s stunning façade and grounds by hosting your event on the Front Lawn or Terrace. Alternatively, overlooking the oldest part of the castle, the Rose Garden is a stunning setting for a marquee or Stretch Tent. You can enjoy a garden party atmosphere on a summer’s afternoon or dance the night away under the stars. (Can accommodate up to 1000 people).
