New Luxury Apartment Available at Thirlestane

We are delighted to unveil a newly completed self-catering apartment within the castle here in Lauder, Scottish Borders. The new two-bedroom luxury apartment has been created within the Old Servants’ Quarters and is now available for short breaks alongside the existing one-bedroom Lauderdale Apartment.

With its own private access and exceptional views of the parkland, the Maitland Apartment offers unrivalled accommodation, in a breath taking romantic castle setting.  The rooms have been brought back to life and exquisitely renovated in the South Wing, an area of the castle that was once the old laundries which is nodded to in the design. This work was only possible thanks to funding from LEADER. Thirlestane Castle Trust were delighted to receive the largest ever award of match-funding in the Scottish Borders to transform the Old Servants’ Quarters.

The apartment offers a truly authentic castle experience with an eclectic mix of contemporary and original castle furniture and items from the collections including dramatic portraits.

It consists of:

- a large, light-filled living area with a dining table and fully-equipped kitchen;

- double bedroom with en-suite shower room;

- second twin/double bedroom;

- and a separate bathroom.

It is accessed from either the same level by the castle gardens or via a private staircase from the enclosed cobbled courtyard that guests are also able to use.

A palette of classic yet contemporary Farrow and Ball colours have been used to create a calm, sophisticated and chic environment. Soft, calm tones of greens and greys sit against the rich red stone of the castle with some more dynamic, unexpected areas - a charcoal tone can be found in the bathroom and a dynamic rich blue in one of the bedrooms.

Private tours of the castle can be arranged for guests while they are staying and there is the opportunity to hire the State Rooms or rustic Victorian Kitchens for exclusive, private dining.

Sarah Maitland-Carew, resident trustee said: "We are excited to be announcing this new holiday apartment and it has been wonderful to transform these spaces into a fantastic high-quality offering. We are very much looking forward to welcoming more people who wish to holiday in the Scottish Borders.”
