Launching Our New Luxury Apartments

Launching Our New Luxury Apartments

After many months of work behind the scenes we are excited to share with you the first images of our new accommodation at Thirlestane Castle.

We are delighted to showcase our new 5* luxury accommodation at the castle. We now have a total of eight bedrooms spilt over five beautifully restored apartments in the South Wing. The apartments can either be booked individually or by groups of up to 16 - perfect for private celebrations or a quiet retreat in the countryside.

The accommodation portfolio offers a truly authentic castle experience. Each apartment has been individually designed and lovingly restored with an eclectic mix of contemporary furniture and original items from the castle collections including dramatic family portraits, furniture, personal photographs and smaller items to provide a link with the castle’s history and family. Many items such as classic Singer sewing machines give a nod to the previous uses of the spaces. All of the bathrooms are lavish and spacious with heritage fittings and marble tiling. Vintage-style chandeliers have been installed throughout to make the most of the high-ceilings and grand proportions of the spaces. Lavish designer fabrics dress the large double-height windows and specially mixed heritage paint adorn the walls with both bold yet calming colours used to create different atmospheres in the different spaces.

Each apartment also has a sitting room and fully fitted kitchen and dining space. The apartments can be taken either individually or all together with groups benefiting from exclusive use of the South Wing including our authentic Victorian Kitchen as a central dining space. The Castle can be let on a self-catered basis or groups can choose to be catered for in one of the State Rooms by our award winning caterers for an exciting dining experience. There is also a range of tailored experiences that can be arranged during your stay. All our apartments are dog-friendly and we can provide travel cots and highchairs for younger guests.

The Earl & Countess
A three-bedroom apartment in what was once the castle's nurseries and before that, the private quarters of the 14th Earl and Countess of Lauderdale. All three bedrooms have their own private bathroom and there is a fully fitted kitchen in the open-plan sitting room. The wallpaper panels in the sitting room are a reproduction of an antique tapestry and are reflected in a large gilt mirror that until recently hung in the castle’s State Drawing Room.

Glenburnie
A one-bedroom apartment which is named after both the moor behind the castle and the horse bred by the family, ridden by local Border’s medal-winner Ian Stark, that went on to become a three-day eventing European Champion. An original range from the 19th-century was unearthed during the building work and now forms a focal point in the sitting room.

The Sculleries
A one-bedroom apartment in an area of the castle where the resident’s clothes were laundered and the mangle in the hallway nods to this former use. The flagstone floor here also dates back to the Victorian era while three double-height windows in the bedroom look over the castle gardens.

The Maitland
This luxurious two-bedroom apartment has been created in an area that was once the old laundries for the castle. Classic Singer sewing machines reflect the apartment’s past whilst large, dramatic, family portraits in the main reception room offer a sense of grandeur.

The Lauderdale
This one-bedroom apartment offers a luxury escape to visitors who wish to stay in a genuinely historic Scottish castle with the extravagant use of the Maitland family’s tartan for the statement bed and other soft furnishings.

Groups in The South Wing
Groups of up to 16 people can take all five apartments and enjoy exclusive use of the South Wing. The Victorian Kitchen is included which provides a central space where the whole party can dine together. We can arrange catering either in the South Wing or, for a special occasion, in one of the castle's State Rooms.

Experiences
Other areas of the castle and grounds can be used for a range of experiences such as the Vaulted Cellars for an authentic Scottish whisky tasting or the Castle Garden for a falconry display or archery lesson. Guests can also tailor their stay with a range of other experiences including spa packages, exclusive tours of the castle with a member of the Maitland family, tailored day trips to the wider Scottish Borders, flowers and food hampers.
