Events at Thirlestane Castle

Civil War Re-Enactment Weekend

Civil War Re-Enactment Weekend

The oldest re-enactment society, the Sealed Knot, is coming back to Thirlestane Castle to bring to life the history of Scotland's involvement in the Civil Wars. They will be delving into what it was like in the 17th Century for both the military and ordinary people.

Soldiers, muskets, pikes and drums in drill displays, life on the living history camp and a skirmish will all be part of the weekend. An education and an experience not to be missed.

You will have the opportunity to walk around an authentic army camp watching meals cooked over open fires and even trying on some of the soldier's armour. Throughout both days musket drills and canon firing will create some noisy entertainment for all ages.

New for this year, the group will kick off both days with a march through the centre of Lauder. We now have the full schedule of events throughout both days:

10:00 March to the castle through Lauder
10:00 Living History Camp opens
10:45 Pike Drill (with children's pike)
11:30 Musket Drill
12:00 Artillery Display
12:45 Musket & Pike Drill (with children's pike after)
14:00 Skirmish
16:00 Camp closes

The same events will run on both days. Please note there may be some changes to the schedule depending on the number of visitors to make sure everyone has an opportunity to see the displays.

The castle building and Tea Room will be open throughout the weekend.

There is no extra cost for the Re-Enactment Weekend, the normal castle admission charge will apply. However, we will not be offering grounds tickets over the weekend and cannot accept annual passes as this weekend is classed as one of our special events.

Tickets are now on sale at or by telephoning 01750 725480. Tickets can also be purchased on the day.
